How to choose a Software Engineering course

Registration Time

Next semester I will be offering CS 170 Language C++, CS 205 Data Modeling and Database Design, and CS 355 Programming Languages.

Take CS 205 as soon as you have the prerequisites. It is a prerequisite for three CS courses, each of which satisfies the Software Engineering requirement:

CS 305 Database Applications Engineering
CS 350 Object Oriented Software Engineering
CS 360 Distributed Applications Engineering

The Software Engineering courses are offered in rotation. Taking CS 205 early will let you select the Software Engineering course that suits your interests best.
CS 205 is also a prerequisite for CS 385 Data Mining

Don’t rush taking CS 355, even if you have the prerequisites. For best results, take it in your Junior or Senior year. Consider learning at least one more language before taking CS 355. Suitable courses include CS 144 Advanced Visual Basic, CS 201 Computer Language Topics (3 cr.), CS 245 Web Applications Development, CS 250 Advanced Topics in Programming with Java or CS 298 Advanced Object Oriented Techniques. But take CS 355 before CS 350.
